Project Achievements for Academic Year 2008

Progress on the matters in the Overall Plan for Academic Year 2008

1. Promotion of contributions to the local area, with nurturing of human resources as a pillar

We made efforts to foster global perspectives by holding symposiums and forums with overseas researchers as guests and by opening new courses as part of general education. We worked on providing a variety of courses through utilization of guest speakers and a mutual network among the Faculties and the Junior Colleges. Professional education was enriched at each Faculty through revisions of curricula and opening of new seminars. We made efforts to encourage students to find employment in Iwate, such as securing five companies as tenants in the Takizawa Village IPU Innovation Center, opening of a career education course, “Research on Local Industries and Businesses,” etc. We promoted recurrent education for working adults: The Faculty of Social Welfare provided skill-enhancement support for local welfare workers, through the “Education Promotion Program to Meet the Relearning Needs of Working Adults Faculty of Social Welfare” as selected by MEXT; eight software-related courses were opened to train embedded software specialists.

2. Promotion of contributions to the local area by using the university's intellectual resources

To contribute to the community by making full use of our intellectual resources, we promoted activities by our faculty and students, such as student volunteer activities, and participation in the policy making process of municipalities. To work on local issues, we established the Morioka City Community Planning Institute, a place of exchange between the university and the local community; each Faculty conducted research that met the needs of the local area. We also promoted educational and research activities with the local area as the field, the liaison between the school and industries, cooperation with the community, and international exchanges.

3. Attracting students at a time of declining birthrate

To meet the academic needs of the people of Iwate and to attract motivated students, we strengthened the liaison with high schools by providing more opportunities for high school students to visit the university, such as university counseling fairs and information sessions. We also worked on reforming the admission policy by drawing up and publishing the AO admission policy.

4. Improving student satisfaction

To improve student performance and to vitalize the university as a whole, we promoted FD and SD activities. We also sought to achieve high student satisfaction by supporting internship and volunteer activities, club activities, Student Council, etc., as well as providing employment support and emergency loan system to support student life.

5. Strengthening interdepartmental liaisons

Making full use of the characteristics of each faculty and junior college, we promoted educational and research activities based on an interdepartmental system, and worked on the “Research on Distance Education for Local Specialists.” We sought to vitalize the university as a whole, through activities such as the 10th Anniversary commemoration projects.

Progress on the items stipulated in the overall evaluation

1. Efforts towards active and strategic university, operations by the strong leadership of the Trustees Chairman and the President

We worked on sharing information such as the operational policies of each Faculty at the deans’ meetings, and grasping the progress between each Faculty and the administration. The issues found by evaluation based on certification were reflected in the Overall Plan for Academic Year 2009, such as the evaluation of the President and the Vice Presidents, etc., a high-priority matter on the academic research expenses agenda, examination of management strategies, and reflection in the budget. We reexamined the university's operational system, by strengthening the planning functions and promoting a consistent entrance exam system.
