Plans for Academic Year 2009

Aiming to put knowledge into practice and to achieve the mid-term plan

Academic Year 2009 is the 5th year of the 1st 6-year phase since the university was reorganized as a public university corporation, when an interim evaluation will be made on the university's achievement in contributing to the local area, a mid-term goal.

High-priority matters for Academic Year 2009

1. Further enhancement of educational ability

1. Establishing an integrated education system from matriculation to graduation

Reevaluation of the admission policy, curriculum policy, and diploma policy.

2. Enhancement of education to foster a wide range of knowledge

Establishing a system where the faculty actively participate in the planning of an interdisciplinary curriculum structure .

3. Enhancement of education to foster highly specialized skills

Work on improving and enhancing educational quality through cooperation and exchange with the local area and other universities, as well as practical training and seminars. Enrich support and educational measures for students aiming to obtain qualifications and pursue careers in specialized fields.

4. Enhancement of educational effects through substantiation of credits and lesson improvement

Sufficient study time for students, and quality education through measures such as a cap on the number of registered credits. The university as a whole can make use of FD (faculty development) activities, systematic use of class evaluation to improve teaching quality.

2. Research activities that tackle issues faced by the local area

1. Development of a system to precisely grasp issues

By exchanging opinions on the university operations with Iwate Prefecture, we seek to develop a liaison and share stance on various issues. We will also hold periodic liaison councils and study sessions with municipalities with whom the university has comprehensive liaison agreements.

2.Strengthening measures to promote specific efforts to handle issues

We will examine restructuring the system regarding research expenses and high-priority concerns. We will also examine support measures for the operation of the Takizawa IPU Innovation Center and its use towards the advancement of the local area and the liaison between the university and industries.

3. Development of a system for making policy suggestions

We will examine utilization of the IPU Community Planning Plaza and promotion of interdepartmental academic research.

4. Active publication of research results

We will hold presentation events such as symposiums and science cafes, and publish research data collections.

3. Building a strong relationship with Iwate's high schools

1. Activities that raise junior and senior high school students' interest in academics

We will establish a menu of on-demand classes and special lectures, and publish informational materials on Iwate Prefecture University's academics.

2. Promoting dialog with Iwate's high schools

We will exchange and share a wide range of opinions and information with the administrators, guidance advisors, etc. The dialog with high schools will be conducted systematically.

3. Acceptance of students who match the education we provide

We will provide information that will enable students to visualize their college life from matriculation to graduation and employment. We will develop a financial aid policy for students.

4. Enhancement of liaison projects with high schools

Measures in which high school students can actively participate, such as open campus days and winter sessions, will be considered to enhance the liaison between the university and high schools.

4. Maintaining a high employment rate even during a poor economy

1. Fostering career-oriented minds

We will enhance measures that respond to the increasing number of transfer applicants from the junior college departments to the 4-year college departments, such as opening of courses outside the formal curriculum.

2. Providing an efficient and effective job-hunting environment

We will conduct a survey with graduates' employers, and make improvements on job fairs. We will work on building an appropriate support system by providing guidance and counseling and grasping the students' job-hunting activities. We will also work on strengthening the system by increasing the number of specialized staff at the Employment Support Center.

3. Finding new potential employers and promoting a mutual understanding between the university and the potential employers

We will find new potential employers for students through internships, informal meetings with related organizations and businesses, systematic job fairs, and thorough visits to companies. We will work on promoting a mutual understanding between the university and companies, building a cooperative system, sharing information through report sessions on activity results, and utilization towards employment support.

4. Encouraging graduates to find employment in Iwate

We will encourage students to stay in Iwate after graduation by finding new potential employers in Iwate, strengthening the cooperative system, and strengthening the hometown employment support for graduates.

5. Drastic strengthening of promotion of educational and research activities

1. Optimizing the university's operations

We will work on improving the administrative functions by reexamining the executive system of the university corporation's management and operations, and by improving the administrative organization and staff ability. We will work on streamlining the operations and improving the operational functions through division of roles and reexamination of the relationship among the Faculties and the university as a whole.

2. Developing a systematic environment for conducting educational and research activities

We will develop and execute a long-term maintenance and repair plan of facilities and equipment through rigorous efforts to increase income and cut expenses. We will grasp the actualities of research funds and examine new frameworks, etc., for the next mid-term plan. We will also work on providing appropriate health care for the faculty, through measures such as study sessions on mental health care.

3. Improving the motivation to promote educational and research activities

By specifying the university's policy on educational and research activities, the faculty members' objectives, working with the Faculties, etc., will be clarified. We will examine faculty evaluation and treatment, as well as granting of incentives such as degree obtainment and a sabbatical system.
