Plans for Academic Year 2008

A New Decade for Iwate Prefectural University

Iwate Prefectural University celebrated its 10th anniversary in April 2008. For the new decade, we hope to achieve integration and independence of the school, as well as provide systematic and strategic contributions to our community through a constant awareness of social needs.

Academic year 2008 marks a halfway point in the school's 6-year mid-term goal and plan. The plans for 2008 include specific measures for approaching and achieving the mid-term goal, to be considered thoroughly and implemented accordingly.

High-Priority Matters for Academic Year 2008

1. Promotion of Community Contribution Through Development of Competent Human Resources

As a prefectural university, we aim to foster creativity, individuality, and deep knowledge in our students, as well as  to contribute to the community by  providing support for students to find employment in Iwate.  We also promote recurrent education for working adults through various educational programs.

1. Nurturing of Global Perspectives

Enrichment of English education; hosting international symposiums and lectures; providing overseas study trip programs and support for studying abroad (Morioka Junior College).

2. Strengthening of General Education

Inviting guest speakers from outside the school; further promoting small-class teaching.

3. Enrichment of Professional Education

Various measures to be taken by each Faculty.

4. Encouraging Graduates to Stay in Iwate

Establishment of the Takizawa Village IPU Innovation Center (tentatively named); support for graduates to find employment in Iwate; support for international students to find employment in Iwate.

5. Promoting Recurrent Education for Working Adults

Support for social welfare professionals in the community to upgrade their skills (Faculty of Social Welfare); Advanced IT Embedded System Engineer Training Program.

2. Promoting Community Contribution by Using the University's Intellectual Resources

To contribute to the community by making full use of our intellectual resources such as researches and activities by our faculty and students, we promote educational and research activities with the community as the field, and researches that meet the needs of the community. We also promote the liaison between the school and industries, cooperation with the community, and international exchanges.

1. Activities by the Faculty and the Students

Establishment of a volunteer center; holding research presentation conferences.

2. Researches on Community Issues

Promoting Open Research on Community Issues; research on the economic gap between the inland and coastal areas of Iwate, expressed numerically (Miyako Junior College).

3. Educational and Research Activities with the Community as the Field

Cancer Professionals Training Program (Faculty of Nursing).

4. Liaison with Industries and the Community, International Exchanges

Planning and participating in the Iwate Higher Education Consortium; planning and participating in the Iwate Future-Making Organization; establishment of Morioka City Community Planning Institute (Faculty of Policy Studies).

3. Drawing Students at a Time of Declining Birthrate

We strive to meet the academic needs of the people of Iwate and to attract motivated students, by strengthening the liaison with high schools to exchange opinions about the admission system. We will also work on the imminent issue of drawing graduate students to fill the enrollment capacity.

1. Liaison with High Schools

Holding admission information sessions for parents.

2. Revising the Admission Policy

Clarification of admission policies of AO entrance exam; use of the University Entrance Center Exam; implementing second-round dates for general selection (Faculty of Software and Information Science).

3. Enrollment Improvement for Graduate Schools

Reconsidering the dates for graduate school admission exam and holidays; active promotion of the extended registration system.

4. Improving Student Satisfaction

To improve student performance and to vitalize the university as a whole, we promote FD and SD activities, and also strive for high student satisfaction by supporting student life as well as internship and volunteer activities.

1. Promotion of FD and SD Activities

Instructional improvements; efforts by the FD Promotion Council; systematization of staff training.

2. Thorough Support for Students Seeking Employment

3. Providing facilities for Student Council, club activities, internship and volunteer activities.

Considering providing credits for internships; setting up an archery practice area.

4. Support for Student Life

Enhancing student support through use of the Iwate Prefectural University Promotion Fund (tentatively named), etc.; organizing a group in charge of international students' exchange.

5. Strengthening Interdepartmental Liaisons

Making full use of the characteristics of each faculty and junior college, we strive to vitalize the university as a whole, through interdepartmental educational activities, research activities for the Global COE Program, and the 10th anniversary commemoration projects.

Considering introduction of educational support system; establishing an academic research fund priority quota.

2. Creating a Sense of Unity as a University

Presenting the school's vision throughout the 10th anniversary commemoration projects.
