1.Features of the Campus Information System


(1)A highly advanced and also an integrated information system

This Campus Information System is referred to as an IPU Integrated Information Network System (abbreviation: Triple IINS). It was made using the most highly advanced devices and parts and the resulting cutting edge technology puts it in the forefront of information systems. This system takes all information input into the system, from research studies to information on campus life, and integrates all data allowing for easy management. Use of a PC allows you to view the information at any time of day or night.
(2) Use of ID Cards ID cards (which also verify status as a student) are issued to all students. This ID card is necessary for use of computers, entrance in to the Media Center, use of the automatic identification document printer, confirmation of your attendance of classes and various other aspects of campus activity and living. Please carry this ID card en route to and returning from the university. The ID cards will be valid for a period of 4 years for university students and 2 years for junior college students. Applications are necessary for any renewals.
(3) Information connection outlets available throughout the university In each room of the Faculty buildings, in the lounges and the coffee corners and various places throughout the university, approximately 3,000 plug outlets have been set up to allow students to tap into the campus information network system from just about anywhere on campus.
(4)Relay Classes The Morioka campus (this university) and the Miyako Campus (Miyako Junior College) are linked together by use of a wire used exclusively for this purpose. Classes, lectures, debates, meetings, etc. can be relayed to and from both campuses.

2. Educational System

(1) One Terminal Per Person In the fourth year when the university will have students at each year level, approximately 2,500 PC or workstation terminals will be available for use providing an environment where there will be one terminal available to each student and university worker.
(2)Media Center building B With the university striving to make all students "information literate", computers located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Media Center building B for use in classes will be made available for free use when not in use in classes. An environment where a computer will always be available is our objective.
a. computer practice room(1)`(4) There are 4 computer practice rooms on the 2nd floor of the Media Center building B. Primarily, the 2 programs with a common base for all students dealing with information management "Information Management Media for Beginners" and "Computers for Beginners" will be available. Practice rooms #1 and 2 will have computers with a Window NT system and practice room #3 and 4 will have Macintosh computers.
b. Language Studies practice rooms(1)`(4) There are 4 language studies practice rooms on the 3rd floor of the Media Center buildng B and programs with a common base for all students are available. It is a room where a computer can be used to practice language studies.
(3)System Practice room On the 2nd and 3rd floors in the same building B, 96 workstation terminals have been set up in practice rooms #1 and #2. Using the terminals will also serve to be practice with Faculty of Software and Information Science studies.
(4) High End Computers High spec computers, super computers and other computers aligned in parallel, are set up providing a place to carry out high speed operations.

3.Use of the information management environment

(1)School Affairs Management System a. Use a PC to complete registration for classes. Registration for classes is twice a year in April and October and registration must be completed via the computer. New students must work on this immediately after entering this university and will be forced to learn to operate a computer. a. Class timetable: class scheduling timetable program is available on the computer. Using this program, fill in your class schedule and complete registration via the computer. This program contains information on required courses and qualifications or degrees.
b. Syllabus: Included with the timetable program is the syllabus. Using this information as reference material, fill in the class scheduling program and this will complete registration for the courses the student will take.
b. Bulletin Board All notices such as cancelled classes, supplementary classes, change of lecture rooms, paging, office notices, etc. will be displayed in the bulletin board section of the electronic billboard. There are 4 billboards in the shared lecture rooms in each building, one in each Faculty building and three in the Multimedia Center. Please pay close attention to the billboards for information pertaining to you.
c. Confirmation of attendance by computer Attendance of classes will be confirmed by the instructor using a portable computer. This is a system that can be used as registration management if necessary. In rooms where computers have been set up, programs that automatically confirms attendance have been installed in the computers.
d. Grade information reference Grades and data have been entered into the system and a student can use a computer to refer to the situation concerning grades.
e. Automatic ID document printing machine Student ID documents, student travel discount documents can be obtained from the automatic ID printing machine located in the Student Affairs section. After entering the necessary information, the machine will print out the document.
(2) Other information handled by the IIIINS a. Information on apartments and part-time work. Students can use a computer to check on information regarding apartments and part-time work. This information has been input into the system under living information.
b.Reserving a facility Using a computer, students can check on the reservation situations of facilities on the campus and make reservations.
c. Employment information Under employment information, corporate business information and employment seeking records of graduates have been entered into the system and students can use a computer to refer to this information.
d. Circle information The top of Web bulletin boards carry circle information and by using a computer, students can refer to this information.

4.Network

(1)ATM-LAN a. In each Faculty building, the main building and all campus facilities the leading technology of the ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) has been prepared linked with a LAN (local area network) offering a transfer speed of 622 megabits per second.
b. The campus network transmit and receive numerical data, text information and multimedia such as animated imagery, still imagery and music.

(2) Connecting from off-campus

In addition to the exclusive use link with the Miyako campus, the system is linked to the internet also and a connection is constantly possible, day and night.
